The Siren- Book Review

By: Katherine St. John

My Goodreads Review: 4/5 stars

This is my first audiobook. I was very apprehensive at first because I love reading books; however, I really enjoyed this experience. I loved hearing each character’s voice and perspective; it felt like listening to a movie.  It is safe to say I will be purchasing more audiobooks in the future.

My Summary:

The Siren by Katherine St. John is a thriller set on an island in the Caribbean that follows the lives of actors filming a new movie.  This new movie is called, The Siren.  Some of the most famous actors have been cast to play in this film.   Many of the actors have either worked together before or have been in a relationship before, which leads to dramatic daily interactions. As conversations between actors and crew members continue, lies and stories begin to unravel, opening up a very dark secret, a secret some will go to great lengths to protect.

My Review:

This is a far less serious thriller than I have read in the past, but I still really enjoyed it.  It was captivating, suspenseful and exciting.  Each character had their secrets, secrets they didn’t want exposed to the world.  However, while on set, it seemed that everyone’s drama continued to collide and cause problems during filming, making it increasingly more difficult to hide who they truly were.

My favourite character was Phoenix. I enjoyed reading the back and forth timeline of her story and following how all the pieces of her life come together.  I especially liked the way St. John concludes Phoenix’s story; the reader gets so much closer.

Another character I really enjoyed was Taylor, the sarcastic executive producer on set.  She had some funny moments but also some important storylines.  Her character shed light on the misogynistic world of Hollywood. The struggles she experienced at the hands of her father and many other men in her life were heartbreaking. These experiences harden her, making her angry with the life she is currently living.

The only part of this book I didn’t really love was the ending.  I found it to be a bit disappointing; I wanted to see **** pay a more humiliating price for everything he had done.  I wanted to see **** feel the wrath of his horrible decisions.

Overall, I really liked this book.  It was entertaining to follow along with the drama of each of the characters, and the ending was captivating.  The story was written well and flowed perfectly.  The author gave each section a perfect amount of time without adding too much unnecessary detail. This would make a great summer read!
